Kumho Tires' adulteration affects many car models in China
comment
South Korean Kumho Tires Co. has utilized more recycled rubber to make tires in its Tianjin plant in China, China Central Television (CCTV) reported Tuesday, citing an anonymous source.
The tread and inner liner of tires were found to not have been produced in accordance with the proportion of Kumho's own guidelines. Instead material from unfinished tires that failed quality checks have been used to save costs.
Defective tires may have bulges and puncture after running less than their life span.
Some car models of Shanghai GM, Beijing Hyundai and Shanghai Volkswagen are reported to be equipped with such tires.
Kumho Tires replied Wednesday that CCTV's judgment was not accurate. "Our Tianjin plant has invited the Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of Tianjin to check our related production lines," said the company in a public letter. "The proportion of recycled rubber is calculated by weight, not quantity."
