China-New Car Assessment Program (C-NCAP) will have its upgrading effectuated this year, which will bring new challenges to domestic independent brand carmakers.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) announced 95 recalls, which involved over a million vehicles. In order to improve the safety of Chinese cars, C-NCAP will launch new regulations on crash-tests to increase the threshold of five-star cars
The new C-NCAP will increase vehicle impact velocity, and add assessments on safety of rear-end collision, active-safety systems, and safety of pedestrians.
Current crash tests will be added with two additional rounds -slash test and pedestrian protection test.
In order to deal with the updated C-NCAP, famous domestic carmaker Chery has established a technology center within its new R&D base. The crash test laboratory in the center covers an area of 32,000 square meters, and is the largest of its kind in Asia.
Chery has been doing well in C-NCAP. Chery A3 was the first independent model to receive a five-star prize in crash test.
The current C-NCAP has assessed 110 car models since 2006, among which 47 are independent brand models. 32 percent of the assessed cars obtained 4 stars, or more.
