Japanese-made autos take up about 70 percent of China's imported car market. After the top 3 Japanese automakers suspended production following the earthquake, sales of Japan-imported cars started to boom.
The car makers will reportedly be out of action for three months, plus an additional three months for taking delivery of goods. That means the next batch of Japanese cars won't be shipped to China until after at least 6 months. And Chinese car buyers are now rushing to local dealerships, to snap up the cars that are still available.
The overwhelming demand has not only boosted sales, but also pushed up prices of Japanese cars in China.
