Homegrown car brands get more recognition

Statistics from China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) shows that in 2009, China's total sales volume of passenger vehicles with self-owned brands is 4.577 million sets, occupying 44.3 percent of the total sales volume of passenger vehicles and increasing by 4.38 percentage points than last year.

Over the past two months of 2010, the sales volume of passenger vehicles with self-owned brands has reached 1.1248 million sets, occupying 49.80 percent of the total sales volume of passenger vehicles. The passenger vehicles with self-owned brands have become an important part in China's auto market.

With the increasingly rising sales volume, the development and progress of the passenger vehicles with self-owned brands has also become one of the important impetuses driving China's auto industry from big to powerful.

Currently, the self-owned brands do not depend on favorable price to draw consumers due to technical progress, quality improvement and brand reinforcement.

Through the purchase of Drive-trainSystemsInternational (DSI), the second largest gearbox manufacturer in the world, Geely has mastered the technology on gearbox, which is one of the key auto technologies.

Through purchasing part assets of Saab, Beijing Automobile has acquired complete quality and manufacture technique system.

Mastering 27 items of key technologies on sedans and 32 items of key technologies on commercial autos, FAW has been provided with the capacity of developing full series of commercial autos independently, and has established two independent development platforms for economic sedans and midsize sedans.

Each year's new auto launch will draw more attention all over the market, because it means more advanced technologies and more rich allocation. In 2009, the number of newly launched auto types in China reached 221, 114 more than last year, among which the self-owned autos occupies the most, reaching 120, 83 more than last year.

Technical progress has also led to quality guarantee and improvement. In the test appraisal on the whole 23 auto types in 2009, which is released by China Automotive Technology & Research Center, for those new autos launched in China, the proportion of four-star autos reached 30.4 percent, and even the five-star autos reached 52.2 percent.
