Jaguar Land Rover plans to build more than 50,000 cars a year from a new plant in China that will employ 5,000 people, the Financial Times reported, citing Chief Executive Officer Ralf Speth.
The project could begin "immediately" if the company reaches a joint-venture deal with a Chinese partner, Speth told the FT. UK Prime Minister David Cameron may press Chinese political leaders to approve the project quickly when he visits next week, the newspaper said.
The UK-based company, owned by India's Tata Motors Ltd., has hired Stefan Berger to help strike a deal, the FT said.
The plant will cost more than 100 million pounds ($162.1 million) and may produce more than 150,000 cars in three years, the newspaper said.
