BYD Auto plans to put into operation its passenger car production base in Changsha, capital of central Hunan province, in October, Shenzhen Post reported Monday, citing Changsha city's economic planning agency.

BYD will release new models to be made by the new plant, which will have annual production capacity of 30,000 cars later this year, according to Changsha Municipal Development and Reform Commission.

After its acquisition of Hunan's Midea passenger car company in August 2009, BYD decided to invest 3 billion yuan ($440 million) to build a new-energy car production base in Changsha, and the base will become a new-energy vehicle production corporation integrating auto research & development, production and sale.

Construction of the first-phase project has been started. The painting workshop, welding workshop and No.8 workshop are completed and new cars are expected to be released in October.

In addition to production of 30,000 cars, the project this year will produce 10,000 diesel-powered buses and 300 electricity-driven buses to be used in public transportation and long-distance passenger transportation services.
