The Jiangsu Economic and Information Commission (EITC) announced that the province's automobile production and sales last year surpassed one million units, Xinhua reported Friday. With 1.03 million vehicles produced and 1.01 million sold in 2010, Jiangsu's automobile market expanded about 50 percent from 2009. The figures represent 5.7 percent and 5.6 percent of the country's overall production and sales, respectively.
Among key enterprises in the region, the Nanjing Automobile Corporation (Nanjing Auto), responsible for selling MG vehicles in China, manufactured and sold a total of 56,500 and 50,500 cars, respectively, over doubling its capacity figures from 2009. Dongfeng Yueda Kia Automobile Company meanwhile produced 338,000 cars and sold 333,000 last year. The Higer Bus Company produced and sold 21,000 large-scale mass transit vehicles, ranking as the country's third most successful large-size vehicle manufacturer in 2010.
"Nanjing Auto, Dongfeng Yueda Kia, Nanjing Changan, Higer and other backbone industries are already of a definite size and possess a relatively strong market advantage," an official in the EITC's industry policy management said. "Jiangsu's automobile industry has improved by a great margin." He added that because the province was able to rapidly increase automobile production during the country's Eleventh Five-Year Guideline, which lasted from 2005 to 2010, Jiangsu's automobile industry had shifted from focusing on transport vehicles to passenger vehicles.
