The small displacement trend of SUV has begun to appear in 2008. According to statistics of CAAM, the total SUV sales volume in 2008 was 447,700. Among all the SUVs, 2-liter below SUV has the biggest proportion and it had a sales volume of 213,400, accounting for 47.67 percent of total SUV sales.
2-liter to 2.5-liter series ranked second with the sales volume of 180,900, accounting for 40.41 percent of total SUV sales volume. Above-2.5-liter series had a small proportion, it was only a supplementary of SUV market and the total sales volume was 53,400 accounting for 11.93 percent of total SUV sales volume.
Some insiders reckon that such a trend will be more apparent in 2009. The small displacement SUV types displayed in this year's Shanghai International Automobile Exhibition shows that automobile industry has already prepared for such a trend.
Particularly, Great Wall Motor, being involved in SUV market for years, has taken small displacement SUV as one of the company's priorities. At the beginning of this April, 2-liter Great Wall Hover H3 came into the market. Being priced between RMB89, 800 yuan and RMB109, 800 yuan, Hover H3 was pretty competitive and gained applause from the market.
In Great Wall's view, Hover H3 is a signaling and linking type, it is the company's "trial sale" for the coming small displacement SUVs. As a matter of fact, Great Wall Motor has noticed the potential market opportunities of small displacement SUVs at the beginning of this year. Wang Fengying, President of Great Wall Motor Company Limited, said that "SUV market is a market with great potential.
The key for enterprises is to research and develop fuel saving SUV, like hybrid or small displacement SUV, and so on. Comparatively, small displacement SUV is a much realistic choice. Though there are only a few of them in the market, we think the market will rise in the future." It is known that 1.6-liter below SUV of Great Wall will gradually come into the market this year.
As for the future development of SUV market, insiders analyzed that SUV occupies less than 7 percent of China's automobile market, far inferior to mature foreign market, which is around 30 percent. Here it is evident that China's SUV market has a great potential for development as well as a promising future.
