The standard version will instead be fitted with an 8-speed automatic transmission that will take the fight to Lexus. A new 5-series wouldn't be complete without the introduction of more electronic driver's aids, and this time BMW is bringing Dynamic Performance Control to the table. The system actively distributes torque between the wheels, depending on how the car acts during a turn. The result is increased security and the ability to handle larger side forces.

2010 BMW 5-Series - Bottom Line
The 2010 5-Series sedans and wagons aren't the best-looking, most practical or the best values in their class, but they're a joy to drive. Following the recent 300-horsepower, 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder optional engine upgrade, there's not much to report for the 2010 BMW 5-Series lineup besides some new wheels. The base engine on the 5-Series is the 230-horsepower, 3.0-liter six in the 528i; The 300-hp turbo six arrives in the 535i; and there's also a 360-horsepower, 4.8-liter V-8 model called the 550i. Each engine comes with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions, and for the available Sport Package, 535i and 550i models come with paddle shifters. All-wheel drive is also offered on six-cylinder models in the 5-Series line, the 528xi and 535xi.

Built on the same new architecture underpinning its GT sibling and the 7 Series saloon, the new 5 Series has a wheelbase around 100mm shorter.
At 2,970mm, the wheelbase of the new 5 Series reaches nearly 100mm longer than the 2,872mm wheelbase of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Making the most of the shared platform, BMW has carried over much of the suspension components found in the 7 Series and 5 Series GT.
Multi-link suspension features at all four corners, replacing the strut-type systems that have held up the 5 Series since its introduction in 1965. Active Front Steering - which debuted on the outgoing E60 5 Series - is featured in the new model, combined with the optional Active Rear Steering, counter-steering the rear wheels to give a tighter turning circle.

The new 5-series is being built off an entirely new chassis, with double wishbones in the front, like on the new X5. The move is designed to give better control and road grip around corners, according to the chassis engineers. With the aid of the extremely fast Flex-Ray automotive network communications protocol, the adaptive shock absorbers is set to become more effective, as will active steering.

Performance will also be improved thanks to the extensive use of lightweight materials including carbon-fiber and aluminum. The car's construction will be a hybrid of an aluminum spaceframe for the front section, and a traditional steel monocoque for the passenger compartment and rear. This will ensure a favorable front-to-rear weight distribution and improved handling. Up front will be an independent suspension with MacPherson struts, with a multi-link layout for the rear. High-performance models will include carbon-fiber body panels to shed even more weight.
