Interior

Ergonomically it's an improved vehicle too, with more intuitive control placements and options. The redesigned controls are thoughtfully clustered and the driver's three most used areas - the centre console, the instrument cluster and electric window controls on the door - are all at roughly the same height.
The overall design of the dashboard is best described as inoffensive but it must be said that fit and finish are very good (this Golf is made in Germany and not South Africa as previously) and the dash plastics are excellent. The person who invented soft-touch dash plastics should be given an award, as it makes the car feel more approachable.

Inside, besides deeply contoured sports buckets and their trademark GTI-tartan inserts, the new model GTI has the same appealing style and super fit and finish of the Golf range.
With dual-zone climate control, air-conditioning, six-disc CD changer with touchscreen, MP3 compatible SD card slot (Bluetooth optional), eight speaker sound system and with Aux-in jack, the GTI comes with ample creature comforts.
There are other premium touches like heat-insulating tinted glass, low-tyre-pressure indicator, dust and pollen filters, halogen headlamps, footwell illumination and height-adjustable front and rear head-restraints.

Interior? Excellent. Good quality, great comfortable seats, all very nicely done. Useful ski hatch. Only downside is a plastic steering wheel (not leather) which feels a little cheap.
Though apparently cheaper to build than the Mk V, it feels even better. The facia gives a higher impression of quality than any other mass-market hatchback. Open the glovebox and you find it's velour lined instead of the usual plastic bin. And if the designers are considerate enough to have thought of a small reminder flasher in the door mirror you wonder how else they're looking after you.
You'll find all mod cons in the central console, by which I mean an aux socket, USB socket and connectors to most modern phones and iPods, so they didn't skimp there. The rear passengers benefit from their own heater/aircon outlets at the back of the console and their own door speakers.
