Handling

Driven on some really boggy roads - ruts galore, crumbling verges and the like - the new Golf excelled. Punting the entry-level 1.4-litre turbocharged 90kW TSI model at first, I was immensely impressed by the ride quality. It absorbed almost all of the rutted road's imperfections and has has gone a long way to proving its suitability for even Australia's most shoddy roads.

All three Golf variants that are on sale in Australia have a good steering feel and I personally liked that the steering wasn't ultra-light: it had a bit of weight which made driving the car rather satisfying.

At the wheel you can feel it. The GTI will pull readily even from taller gears, and when being rowed along through either of the six-speed boxes, spears effortlessly from apex to apex.

Handling? The real surprise: excellent. I was expecting boring handling with nothing but understeer. Whatever VW have done has reduced understeer and actually allows a little bit of movement on the rear in corners to tighten the line: this is a lot of fun, and unexpected compared even to a Mk5, which was dull.

Out on the road, it's pleasant and quiet to drive. But the steering is far from the revelation I'd been led to believe. There's no real 'feel' and it isn't linear, like the Focus and Megane so there's a change in the level of effort as you turn the wheel. It's not horrible, but it's just not as good as the Focus or Megane. With snow and ice covering the roads during he week of my test, I didn't get the chance to push the car safely and check out its ultimate grip, so handling impressions will have to wait.
