Visually, the new Sportage has more affinity with the new Sorento than the outgoing model, using Kia's signature bow-shaped grille, framed by large, wrap-around headlamps. Functional air scoops and fog lamps beneath the grille mimic sport sedans. From the side, a bullet-shaped profile floats over large wheel wells, with a narrow greenhouse. Upswept taillamps and a narrow rear glass are similar in appearance to the Sorento.

Its smooth sides gave it a very modern look, and a clean break from Kia's past. A strip of LED parking lights gave the car a more upscale style than its price would suggest. Kia's new design language was apparent in the grille, with its up and down tabs. Our EX trim model, the top trim, also sported 18-inch wheels, the gloss black paint in the angular cut-outs another unique new Kia signature style. The back of the car was smooth and nicely molded, but the high beltline along the sides and the thick C pillar, combining to create a fortress like look, are an all-too-common sight amongst new cars.

The front fascia is certainly the strong point of the car, brightly styled with what Kia folks even admitted was an "Audi-like" pair of headlamps, complete with the LED lighting that has come to adorn every new Audi. These upscale headlamps set the tone for the entire vehicle, conveying a near-luxury appeal and style typically not found on any car in the class, let alone Kia - a brand renowned for its value. Moving past the headlamps provides for even more surprise and satisfaction - this is no one-hit wonder. The upper and lower grilles share a very Kia-esque shape, which adds to the fluid and well thought-out motion of design.
