Japanese automaker Nissan officially opened a plant in St. Petersburg at a ceremony attended by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, the Interfax news agency reported.

The plant is projected to employ 750 people, with an annual production capacity of 50,000 vehicles. The Teana and X-Trail models will be produced at the plant.

Nissan chief executive officer, Carlos Ghosn, who enjoyed a ride with Putin in the first Teana assembled in Russia at the ceremony, said the plant will start to produce the X-Trail three months after the Teana.

The Russian car market was expanding rapidly before the economic crisis hit in late 2008.
