The US Senate might pass a $2 billion extension for the Cash for Clunkers program without any changes on Thursday, a spokesman for Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday.

The leaders of Democrats and Republicans in the Senate were reported by the Automotive News nearing an agreement on the debate and vote procedures, citing Don Stewart, a McConnell spokesman.

To send the Cash for Clunkers program to US President Barack Obama to sign, the Senate must pass the $2 billion extension of the $1 billion program which was passed by the House last week.

The Obama administration has pushed the Senate to vote this week on the $2 billion extension.

If the $2 billion additional funding for the program is passed, it would last to the end of September.
