Ford Motor Co.'s top sales analyst said August 19 that US auto sales will rise in August for the first time in 22 months.

"It's assured," George Pipas told the Automotive News. He added it was likely sales to individual customers would be up by at least 10 percent.

The initial surge resulting from the federal government's Cash for Clunkers incentive lifted the July sales rate to 11.1 million vehicles.

October 2007 was the last month in which the US auto industry posted a gain, when sales rose 1.2 percent from year-earlier totals.
