PSA Peugeot Citroen will introduce the RCZ HYbrid4 concept car at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. Based on the RCZ Coupe, Peugeot makes the follow claims for the concept:
1. Innovative hybrid-diesel technology that capitalises on recognised know-how in HDi engines and electric vehicles
2. Parallel architecture allowing alternate or simultaneous operation of the HDi engine and the electric motor for optimal efficiency depending on whether the car is being driven in town or on the open road
3. Breakthrough (-35%) in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions based on equivalent performance
4. "Zero emissions" mode benefiting the environment and offering quiet operation
5. Enhanced performance with a potential 200 bhp (147 kW)
6. 4-wheel drive and transverse adaptability ensuring a technical and economic solution
Three key factors should be noted: The diesel engine, the parallel hybrid architecture and the "zero emissions" mode. These suggest that the HYbrid4 will be a plug-in, blended mode hybrid using a hybrid architecture similar to that of Ford and Toyota in which the car can be propelled by both the diesel engine and the electric motor.
Not identified is the battery technology and hence the "zero emission" mode operating parameters. Peugeot has the chose of two French companies for batteries partners, if it wishes: Saft and Bollore. Or it may go with other supplies from the Europe, North America or Asia.
As with all concept cars, whether or not it goes into production will dependent on pubic interest, government support and economic viability.
