Toyota to hire 800 temporary workers in October

Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's biggest automaker, will hire about 800 temporary workers in October as government stimulus programs boost global car demand.

"Car sales both in Japan and overseas are gradually recovering, helped by government incentives and tax cuts introduced this spring," Toyota said in a statement September 8.

Toyota will add the workers in plants in Japan that make cars including the Prius hybrid model, company spokesman Hideaki Homma said by phone yesterday. The hiring of temporary workers is Toyota's first since June last year, according to the statement.

The Prius was Japan's top-selling car for a third straight month in August.
