Ford Motor Company Wednesday unveiled a new small car, Ford Figo, which it will start producing in 2010 in its manufacturing center in Chennai, southern India.
Ford global CEO Alan Mulally personally unveiled the car in New Delhi, saying the new car reflects Ford's "commitment to compete with great products in all segments of this (Indian) car market".
Ford Figo is designed and engineered to compete in India's small car segment, which accounts for more than 70 percent of the new vehicle market, said Ford Motor in a press release.
"We are confident that the new Ford Figo will be extremely attractive to Indian car buyers," said Michael Boneham, president and managing director of Ford India.
The Ford Chennai manufacturing center has a production capacity of 200,000 units and is becoming a Ford regional center for small car engineering and production, said the press release.
Apart from Indian market, the new car will also target those of other countries in the Asia-Pacific region and in Africa, according to the press release.
