Auto show raises the temperature

The two-door FT-CH is shorter and lighter than its Prius. Toyota is targeting sales of 1 million hybrids a year worldwide by launching eight new models over the next few years. It plans to offer plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars from 2012 and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles in 2015.

Another US maker, the Ford Motor Corp, announced that it would begin making the next generation of hybrid vehicles and plug-in hybrids at its Michigan plant in 2012. The next generation of the Ford Focus was launched and it will include an electric version within two years.

"It's much better than last year with more people, more cars," said Gary Dilts, of marketing information company JD Power and Associates. "The market is clearly recovering and many of the car makers may make money this year."
