Complaints of faults in cars made by Toyota have now spread to Australia, local media reported Thursday.

Complaints over faults in the cars have now been received on four continents: North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The number of cars recalled due to faults over the last year is set to exceed 8 million.

"Some customers have experienced an inconsistent break feel when the vehicle is driven over bumpy roads, potholes or slippery roads," Toyota Corp. Australia was quoted as announcing.

The Prius car, which has gained huge popularity because of its green credentials, was the model customers complained about.

Toyota has had a difficult 2010 as complaints about faults in its cars have led to widespread global media coverage questioning the safety of the automakers models and contributed to a downturn in sales in recent weeks.

Japan has reported receiving 14 complaints about Toyotas, while in the United states around 80 people have complained of faults in the cars, leading to a government meeting with Toyota on Thursday to discuss measures to prevent public panic and improve safety in the cars.

Toyota announced Thursday that it expects to turn a profit this fiscal year despite the crisis.
