Malaysia registered a year-on- year increase of 16 percent in auto sales in May to 50,845 units due to improved market conditions and rising output, said Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) last Friday.

In a statement issued on Friday, MAA attributed the sales growth to the continued favorable market conditions and output increase which enable to meet the rising demand.

Sales of passenger vehicles rose 15 percent from a year ago to 46,229 units while that of commercial vehicles increased by 21 percent to 4,616 units, it said.

In January-May period, vehicle sales surged by 20 percent year on year to 247,072 units, in which the passenger vehicles rose to 222,947 units and commercial vehicles, 24,125 units.

Output of vehicles soared 36 percent in May to 49,666 units, bringing the total amount in the first five months up to 241,658 units.

The sales is expected to continue the upward trend in June, MAA forecast.
