New car sales declined by 18.7 percent from a month earlier to stand at 171,449 units with sold French brands fell by 19.8 percent over the period, according to CCFA's statement.

Sales of foreign cars brands suffered a 17.4-percent drop, it added.

France used a scrapping scheme, which offered 1,000 euros for each 10-year-old car, to help the business coping with the 2008-2009 crisis. The public aid was reduced to 500 euros from July 1. These subsidies will be maintained until the end of the year
