Children's Opera
Snow White celebrated International Children's Day on Saturday with a performance at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing, also kicking off the 8th China's Dream, Seedling Action festival, which showcases performances of children's plays.
Snow White was the result of joint efforts by the NCPA and an international team made up of Cai Jiahan as librettist, NCPA resident composer Cai Dongzhen composing music and Stephan Grogler from Switzerland working as director and set designer. Together, they brought the classic fairy tale to the opera stage.
The festival, which runs from June to August, brings a selection of 20 domestic children's plays as well as several international productions to the capital for children to enjoy over the summer.
The 20 troupes come from different regions around the nation, such as Xi'an in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, and South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
The performances revolve around three themes this year - "inheriting traditional cultural heritage," "upgrading the power of creation" and "expanding international vision."
Audiences will have the opportunity to watch Chinese children's plays, while many international teams will also bring performances to the stage, such as the British production
Madagascar. The brand new musical will entertain children with melodic music, while also giving them the opportunity to learn more about the animals and geography of Africa.
