Tokyo stocks ended lower Thursday in choppy trade as a positive lead inherited from Wall Street overnight was counted by growing concerns over the United States' latest tariff offensive against Mexico.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 2.06 points, or 0.01 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 20,774.04.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 5.17 points, or 0.34 percent, to finish at 1,524.91.
Mining, and oil and coal product-oriented issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
