A motorist in East China who dared police to a foot race after fleeing a traffic stop checking for drunk drivers wasn't the type of driver they were after.
Police had set up their check stop on June 6 in Dongying, Shandong Province, when a driver waiting in line of queued vehicles suddenly abandoned his car and ran away.
An officer caught sight of the man and shouted, "Dare to run…OK, I'll give you a 200-meter head start," then ran after the man.
The driver was about to be caught and pleaded with the cop. "Bro, bro, please don't catch me… please," according to a video clip of the police officer's video recorder that was uploaded by the Beijing News.
"Were you drinking and driving?" asked the police officer. "No, I didn't," the man answered. Test showed the man had not consumed alcohol.
"I forget if I am drunk," the man explained.
"That's not very convincing," said the police officer who discovered the man was without a driver's license.
The man first said he had left his license at home, but finally admitted that he didn't have one.
He was fined 1,000 yuan ($145) for driving without a license, and lost a shoe in his attempt to outrun the officer.
