Two quick-thinking train drivers saved 800 passengers from a potential derailment by reversing the train from mountain floods in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.
K7139 was traveling normally between two mountain train stations Kuishan and Ximashan train stations when Kong Xiangjiang, one of the drivers, noticed rising floodwater had almost completely submerged the tracks.
Kong halted the train, but the drivers realized it might overturn at any moment as the muddy floodwaters were moving land, soil and rock all about them, China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Saturday.
With the assistance of the other driver, Kong decided to reverse the train 50 meters to a drier, safer zone.
The railway control center replied to their emergency call five minutes later and the drivers returned to the nearest station with 800 passengers safely on board.
The passengers did not know what had happened until they got off the train.
Internet users hailed the drivers' alertness and professionalism. Many urged the railway company to reward them.
"It's cool! I didn't know that a train also has a reverse mode," one user posted on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo platform.
The name of the other driver was not mentioned by CCTV.
