Chinese women on social media rushed to join the "boyfriends' gift competition" by posting photos of the odd gifts they received from their boyfriends on Wednesday, which was Qixi Festival, also known as Chinese Valentine's Day.

The competition, from Wednesday to Saturday, ranked the gifts according to the number of forwards, comments and likes, and has been viewed 95 million times on Sina Weibo.

The top weird gift was a bag of dried rose bud which is used to make tea. It received 7,182 forwards, comments and likes as of press time.

The woman's boyfriend "said he would send me 999 roses, and he did exactly that!" a competitor with the username "Qietingyuge" wrote, attaching the "dumbfounded" emoji.

Second place went to a photo featuring a woman holding a red banner reading: "To piggy; happy Qixi Festival! From your handsome boyfriend."

In third place was a gift that came in a box that contained only a brick printed with the words, "Our love is more solid than a brick."

The competitor said most women who receive such a gift would likely want to swat their boyfriend with it.

"They're really straight and nerdy," a netizen said of the boyfriends, a comment that received a lot of agreement.

Many netizens said the gifts were oddly funny but understandable. "The boyfriends might have prepared the gifts very diligently but things always turn out a little weird," said a netizen.
