Shanghai police have detained a gang whose members pretended to be girls in an online game and tricked male players to spend money on them.
According to a video posted by Dragon TV on Sina Weibo, a Chinese Twitter-like social platform, the gang members pretended to be innocent girls who knew nothing about the game.
They met their "targets" in the games and used the same routine to start chatting with them.
They then built trust with the male players by connecting with them on Wechat and asking to play with them from time to time.
The members' WeChat accounts showed pictures of beautiful girls, leading the targets to believe they had "struck gold."
The online game involved a marriage system that requires payment.
By asking the victims to marry them in the game, the gang members succeeded in making more than $10 million, according to the police.
The money was then split between the game company and the gang members.
