A Chinese web celebrity who sells products on live broadcasts and video clips paid more than 50 million yuan ($7 million) to 42 celebrities including Jackie Chan to perform at his wedding but ended up making more than 100 million yuan by live broadcasting the event.
The online seller whose internet name is Xinba held his wedding in the Beijing Olympic Sports Center on Sunday and his paid-to-come guests also included singer Leehom Wang and movie star Cecilia Cheung.
The total cost of the wedding was 70 million yuan which included the 50 million yuan Xinba paid celebrities to attend.
Jackie Chan and Leehom Wang both sang a song congratulating the couple, and Cecilia Cheung presented the couple with a gift, according to a video posted by Pear Video.
Sohu news said that after his wedding, Xinba began to live broadcast and sold more than 100 million yuan worth of products, which likely earned him 30 million yuan on his wedding night.
Xinba's wedding caught Chinese netizens' attention, with many saying it was a cheesy move to pay guests to attend and then recoup those cost by selling products on his wedding night. "It is just a show to attract us to buy his products. I guess those celebrities who agreed to attend need the money," a netizen wrote.
Netizens also complained that Xinba often promotes products that are of dubious quality.
