A farm in China's Great Northern Wilderness in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province began to reap rewards from its rice harvest on Monday and the first bowl of the new crop was auctioned off for 9,999 yuan ($1,405).

The farm in the Great Northern Wilderness, known as China's granary of the north, is one of the most important agricultural regions and is famous for its fertile black soil. 

The farm began its harvest on Monday, and the first batch was processed and cooked on site and then auctioned off.  A video posted by Pear Video on Sina Weibo shows a woman placing the highest bid, paying 9,999 yuan for a single bowl of rice.

She ate the rice as soon as her successful bid was announced and said it filled her up.

Many netizens said the event was a rather crass way of showing off a person's wealth considering rice is a symbol of China's ability to feed its people.
