Bangladesh announces national mourning for Thursday's fire victims

The Bangladeshi government on Friday announced that Saturday will be a national day of mourning for those who died in the country's capital Dhaka in a devastating fire on Thursday night, a senior official said.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad told Xinhua on Friday, "the government decided to observe mourning day Saturday in commemoration of the fire victims."

Apart from this, he said all people of the country have been urged to say prayer for the fire victims.

At least 109 people were killed and over 40 others injured in a devastating fire accident which took place Thursday night in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka, a senior official said Friday.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dhaka Md. Mohibul Haque told Xinhua on Friday, "The death toll rose to 109 from the devastating fire."

According to the DC, the worst fire broke out at about 8:45 p.m. local time Thursday following explosion an electrical transformer and it soon spread to some 7-9 houses in the congested residential area of the old part of the Dhaka city.

This is the second deadly disaster to strike the capital in 48 hours after a five-story building collapsed on Tuesday night, killing 25 people.
