The Forbidden City Concert Hall will tonight ring with Chinese songs dating back to the 1930s and 1940s by renowned musicians such as He Luting and Xia Zhiqiu.
Singers including Ying Huang (soprano), Zhang Jianyi (tenor) and Liao Changyong (baritone) will be accompanied on piano by Wei Fugen.
The ensemble will perform classic songs including Si Xiang, Hongdou Ci and How I Miss You as part of the ongoing Beijing Music Festival.
"Most of the contemporary students know nothing about these classic songs and even fewer learn them. But these songs are meaningful.
"They can rouse people's interest in music from the revolutionary years," said musician Zhang Jianyi, who will deliver a lecture ahead of the concert at 6 pm.
"Looking For Home, Searching From Afar" will be the theme of the concert.
It is considered part of all the musicians' efforts to encourage more music lovers and students to review the classic songs.
To help achieve this goal of bringing music to a wider audience, organizers of the community concert have lowered the ticket price to 20 yuan.
