Protection of other dialects

Changsha

Peng Zerun, a professor from Hunan Normal University and a member of the Hunan provincial committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said in 2010 that promoting Putonghua is part of modernization. However, it should be done in an orderly way and allow the balanced development with other dialects. He suggested a law should be issued to promote the Hunan dialect. The dialect should also be set as a school subject. More artistic works could be created in the dialect to help preserve local culture.

Suzhou

In 2008, a pilot audio database program was set up in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. This program helps preserve local dialects in Jiangsu and will provide resources for language researchers.

Shanghai

Since 2005, many Shanghai residents have advocated the preservation of Shanghainese. The educational authorities have taken some measures, such as arranging Shanghainese kindergarten teachers and letting the children have one Shanghainese class a week. Two buses now announce their stops in Shanghainese, and more bus routes will take up this practice.

Hangzhou

In 2004, Mao Haitao, a member of the  Hangzhou committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative, submitted a proposal calling for the preservation of Hangzhou dialect and culture. He suggested that primary and middle school students should be required to communicate with their parents and classmates with Hangzhou dialect. The media should also run programs to promote the use of Hangzhou dialect. People are encouraged to speak the dialect on informal occasions.

Hainan

Liu Jiansan, a professor of the Chinese Department at Hainan Normal University, argues that there are three difficulties in preserving the Hainan dialect. The linguistic environment is changing and people in most places speak Putonghua rather than their own dialects. 

Hainan residents also lack motivation to preserve the dialect. Many locals don't have any enthusiasm for teaching the young. Finally, children in school all speak Putonghua and refuse to speak dialects. Liu believes more should be done to preserve dialects.
