The Indonesian government planned to send home all over 12,000 Indonesian citizens in conflict- ridden Syria, the Jakarta globe quoting a minister reported here on Wednesday.
Manpower and Transmigration Minister Muhaimin Iskandar said the government would even go so far as to forcibly send home those who refused the plan, adding that it could not guarantee the security of those who stayed.
"We'll send home all the Indonesian migrant workers. We'll continue to do this until the number [of Indonesians in Syria] becomes zero," he said.
As of June 10, less than 300 out of the 12,000 Indonesian worlers had been sent home following the escalating conflict in Syria, which has reportedly killed more than 14,000 people.
The minister said the Indonesian government had been sending home its citizens from Syria for a year now, and had applied a moratorium on the sending of migrant workers to the Middle Eastern state since August of last year.
He added that there had been some difficulties in the evacuation process due to a fairly large number of Indonesian migrant workers who arrived to Syria through illegal means and were thus unregistered.
"There have been many of those who said they were headed to the United Arab Emirates or some other countries, when in fact they went to Syria," Muhaimin said.
The Manpower and Transmigration Ministry added that the government is currently prioritizing Indonesians living in areas most affected by the conflict in Syria, including 405 people in Homs, 426 people in Rif Dimasq, 86 people in Hama, 17 people in Idleb and 11 people in Dar'a.
The Indonesian Embassy in Damascus has opened up hotlines through which Indonesian citizens can seek consultation on the latest developments in Syria or communicate with embassy or Foreign Ministry officials on the evacuation process.
