An unmarried 22-year-old gave birth to a baby girl in the women's washroom at a downtown shopping mall Sunday, local media reported.
Janitorial staff found the new mother lying on the ground on the second floor of Yong'an Department Store on Nanjing Road East Pedestrian Street in Huangpu district around 12:30 pm Sunday. She was covered in blood and was calling for help, according to a news report on the Shanghai Television Station (STV).
She was rushed to Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital, where doctors deemed both she and her 2.42-kilogram baby healthy.
The new mother is a native Shanghainese. Her boyfriend was informed that he was a father and arrived at the hospital later that day, according to the STV report.
When reached by the Global Times Monday, a press officer from the hospital said that the mother had already gone home, and declined to provide further information to protect the patient's privacy.
