Eastern Indian boy wins gold in global maths event

A 17-year-old boy from the eastern Indian state of West Bengal won a gold medal at the 53rd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held at Argentina, his father told media Tuesday.

Debdyuti Banerjee, who hails from Hooghly district, around 70 kms from the state capital, won gold, while another Indian student Akashdeep won bronze.

Barun Banerjee, the winner's father and also a mathematics teacher, said, "last year my son won bronze. This year he won gold. We are all waiting for his return to celebrate."
