Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of Myanmar's National League for Democracy (NLD) and parliamentarian, stressed on Monday the need to upgrade the country's education and health facilities to meet the contemporary international standard.

Speaking at a press conference given at her party's headquarters here for the first time days after returning from a historic visit to the United States, Suu Kyi emphasized the need to revitalize the Yangon University and raise the level of education of the university which met the world standard and once enjoyed recognition by the world as Myanmar's highest education institution.

She also stressed the need to upgrade the country's health infrastructure which she said is still unsound with the system, citing the war-left Yangon General Hospital built in time of the British rule.

She placed special emphasis on setting up professional institutes to care for those who stay out of school.

Clarifying on her recent US visit, Suu Kyi said her trip was mainly aimed at thanking those stakeholders who supported Myanmar and helped remove sanctions.

Asked about her probable journey to China, she replied that there is no plan yet for the trip so far, saying that she did has the desire to travel to the northeastern neighbor but denied that her travel to China is based on worry that she had visited the United States.

China being close neighbor of Myanmar, she said she is desirable for the trip for maintaining the already existing good relations, citing that she was accorded warm welcome and greeting by Chinese people during her trip to Europe and holding that her intentional trip to China is to bring closer the relations between the peoples of Myanmar and China.

She told the press that there is no need to worry about for fear of unbalanced relationship with either side.

She recalled that Myanmar has good and warm relationship with both countries ever since its independence, believing that such relationship should be continued.

She vowed to make efforts as much as possible for fostering even better and more friendly relationship with the two countries not because of geographic condition of Myanmar itself but because of the global condition.

Aung San Suu Kyi arrived back Yangon on last Thursday from a 20-day historic visit to the United States, bringing the improved Myanmar-US relations to a new high.

It was the Nobel Peace Laureate's first visit to the US in 24 years after she was released from house arrest and became a parliamentarian after winning April by-election.

During her visit in Washington DC, invited by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Suu Kyi called on President U Thein Sein who arrived the capitol later and then she was received by President Barack Obama at the White House who expressed welcome of Myanmar's democratic transition and the recent progress made by President U Thein Sein and Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) Party.

Suu Kyi, who is also chairperson of Committee for Rule of Law and Tranquility of the Lower House, picked up the US Congressional Gold Medal award, the highest award for civilian presented by the US Congress, as well as the Global Citizen Award presented by the Atlantic Council based in New York and Asia Society Global Vision Award.
