Obama wins US presidential election

Barack Obama has won re-election as US president. Chinese media opined the results will not influence future US policies, and suggested China should have a real understanding of the election.

The Global Times said that US policies would not have seen any dramatic change and the problems in the US will remain whether Obama or Romney had won.

However, "a real understanding of the US presidential elections is extremely important to Chinese society," the paper said.

"We can also heed warnings from their examples. Modern Chinese society should be able to discern the truth. China's rise is already an unstoppable trend and it is halfway through this path," the paper explained.

The election results will not influence its global strategy, commented the Hong Kong Economic Journal.

Under the US federal system, it is the US president who decides foreign policy. However, no matter what the foreign policy is, it must comply with the US' national interests. Therefore, no matter who wins, the US global strategy will never change.

Naw Kham's sentence shows China's power

The Intermediate People's Court of Kunming in Southwest China's Yunnan Province sentenced Naw Kham and three of his henchmen to death on November 6 for killing 13 Chinese sailors on the Mekong River on October 5, 2011, reported the Xinhua News Agency.

Two other criminals received a death sentence with a two-year reprieve and eight years in prison respectively.

Some Chinese media said the country had showed the world its power by protecting its people and judicial process in executing Naw Kham's case.

The Global Times said that the death sentence for Naw Kham was not only a comfort to the families of the dead, but also marked a step forward in protecting Chinese overseas.

China's national power provides strong support for punishing overseas perpetrators. Moreover, "mature mechanisms to crack down on crime are also needed in the complicated Golden Triangle region. Friendly relationships between China and the countries in the region have to shift toward guaranteeing security of navigation in the Mekong River," the paper elaborated.

An opinion piece by the Beijing Times suggested the world was able to see China's justice and dignity in the judicial process for Naw Kham's case.

"The following procedure for this case will also be conducted as a fair trial. The procedure for this case will also set an example for domestic cases and promote China's criminal justice system," the paper added.

China is seeking more ways and increasing its efforts to protect its people overseas under the legal system. This will build China's image as a big power, and also win the world's respect, said the Beijing News.

"In the process of Naw Kham's case, China held equal dialogues and cooperation with other countries, and adjudicated the case in a fair and public manner. This case could become an example for similar cases in the future," the paper said.
