The shattered family of the 23-year-old victim of a horrifying Delhi gang rape who died Saturday at a hospital in Singapore expressed hope the death of their daughter would help make India a safer place to live for women.

Indian High Commissioner T.C.A. Raghavan told local media the family was moved by a large number of messages of support they had received from everywhere.

"They hope that the death of their child will lead to a better future for women in Delhi and India," he quoted them as saying.

The gang-rape victim was sent to Singapore for treatment Thursday but died after two days due to multi-organ failure.
