An explosion occurred at a laboratory of Japan's Kyoto University on Monday afternoon, seriously injuring a student, local press reported.

A 24-year-old postgraduate student was doing a chemical experiment when the explosion happened at around 4:30 p.m. local time. The student suffered a pelvic bone fracture and was sent to a nearby hospital, Japan's public broadcaster NHK said.

Local police and fire authority are further investigating the cause of the accident.
