Pakistan's hockey players returned home on Wednesday night from India after their withdrawal from the Hockey India League (HIL) following the escalating border tension between the two arch-rival neighbors, local media reported.
Eight out of the total nine Pakistani hockey stars arrived at the Allama Iqbal International Airport in the eastern city of Lahore on Wednesday night while one of them reached back through the eastern Wagah border.
The players told media that the situation in India was not ideal for their presence as they were receiving continue threats from different sides and they finally had decided to withdraw from the event.
Pakistan's nine top players signed contracts with the different Indian hockey franchises to play the 34-match League that has already started on Monday.
The players on Tuesday withdrew from the league after consulting with the Pakistan Hockey Federation officials in the wake of protests by Indians following border tension.
"Due to extraordinary circumstances, it has been decided to send the nine Pakistan players home," Hockey India chief Narinder Batra told media on Tuesday in New Delhi.
According to the Indian media reports, all the players would be paid the full fees as they were ready to play but the security situation was not suitable.
The problem started on Sunday when a group of protesters forced a team having Pakistani players to stop its practice session in a protest against the rising tension at the border areas.
At least three Pakistani and two Indian soldiers have been killed in a number of skirmishes at the Kashmir border areas during last one week.
