More than half Americans support President Barack Obama's proposed measures to reduce gun violence, showed a Gallup poll released Friday.

Of the respondents, 53 percent said they wanted their representatives in Congress to vote for the set of proposals, compared with the 41 percent who preferred otherwise, according to the survey, conducted on Thursday.

The poll was conducted one day after Obama unveiled a sweeping and expansive package of proposals on gun control, more than a month after the December 14 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, which left 26 people dead, including 20 children.

Eighty-two percent of Democrats and 75 percent of liberals expressed support for the package, while only 22 percent of Republicans and 27 percent of conservatives favored it, the poll found.

On Wednesday, Obama signed 23 executive orders on gun control, which do not need Congressional approval, including measures to help schools hire police officers and increase research on gun violence.

The president also pressed Congress to take actions to pass gun control bills, including renewing an expired military-style assault weapons ban, imposing a 10-round limit on ammunition magazines and expanding background checks for all gun sales.

At the White House ceremony, Obama was joined by children from around the country who wrote him letters in the wake of Sandy Hook shooting to express concerns over gun violence and school safety.

The tragedy has renewed calls for gun control in the United States, and the Gallup poll showed that Americans' general support for stricter gun control measures has since surged remarkably.
