Two moderate earthquakes shook on Sunday morning southern and western Greece with no injuries or extensive material damages reported, according to local media.

The first tremor measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale jolted the island of Zakynthos on the Ionian Sea and the western coast of the Pelopponese peninsula, Greek scientists at the Athens Seismic Observatory estimated.

Its epicenter was located at about 69 kilometers south of Zakynthos -and some 300 kilometers west of Greece's capital- at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers.

The second quake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale shook the southern part of the Pelopponese peninsula two hours later. The second tremor's epicenter was located at approximately 24 kilometers southwest of the city of Methoni -and about 245 kilometers south of Athens- at a depth of 20 kilometers.

Greece is earthquake-prone and has been regularly hit by moderate and stronger earthquakes which have caused great destruction throughout centuries.

In the most recent catastrophe in 1999, a tremor measuring 6 on the Richter scale hit Athens, causing dozens of casualties.
