Chen Guangbiao, an entrepreneur famous for his charity activities and unconventional behavior, plans to suggest a national "food-saving day" on which citizens will fast as a way to remember famines of the past.
Chen hopped on a flight to Beijing Saturday to audit the National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference this year for the 13th time, although he is not a deputy. "The 'food-saving day' is my primary suggestion this year to improve awareness of widespread food waste," he said.
Chen lost two siblings to starvation when he was a child, an experience which made him fearful of a similar fate and very careful about wasting food.
