Turkey captured three fugitives who had escaped from a Greek prison near the Turkish border, local media reported Tuesday.
Earlier, Turkish police were informed by the Greek side that seven prisoners had escaped from a newly-built prison in northeastern Greece near the Turkish border.
The inmates got out of the prison through a window and jumped over a fence. Among them, three are from Iraq, and one each from Algeria, Egypt, Syria and Turkey. Six had been jailed for trafficking in illegal migrants and one for drug trafficking.
The three fugitives swam across the Meric river and entered a restricted military zone, and were immediately captured by Turkish border guards.
The report identified the captured fugitives as Ahmad Massoud, from Algeria; Fahmy Alla al-Din, from Egypt; and Abdulkarim Marwan, from Iraq.
Turkey will deliver them to the Greek authorities in accordance with the readmission agreement between the two countries.
