A six-year-old girl has been raped and severely injured in New Delhi. The child was found inside a public toilet on Saturday morning with injuries on her neck and genitals.
The case comes only days after the rape of a five-year-old in the capital, which re-ignited the demand of capital punishment for all rapists. The incident happened in Badarpur district, on the outskirts of New Delhi.
The child’s family members said she had gone to the public toilet for her daily bath. They were then told by locals she was lying in the toilet, with injuries on her neck. The young girl was taken to a trauma center for an emergency surgery. A surgeon confirmed an attempt had been made to slit her throat. Police has detained 22 suspects with past criminal records.
Brutal sex crimes are common in India. New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among major cities, with a rape being reported on average every 18 hours. One in three rape victims in India are children, according to UNICEF.
