Chinese special envoy to the Middle East Wu Sike paid a four-day visit to the Palestinians, during which he met with a number of senior Palestinian officials, including Tayeb Abdel Rahim, secretary- general of the Palestinian presidency.
d  To Israel

Chinese special envoy for the Middle East Wu Sike traveled to Israel in late April to make preparations for Netanyahu's visit to China. During the trip, he listened to Israel's views on the Israel-Palestinian issue and regional tensions.

Why China?

dd  Tayeb Abdel Rahim, secretary-general of the Palestinian presidency:

"We count on China's influential role; therefore we call on China to exert more efforts with other parties to get the peace process out of this deadlock and to rescue the region from unexpected negative consequences."
d  Mark Regev, spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu:

"We believe that Israel and China cooperating, Chinese industry with Israeli technology, Chinese agriculture with Israeli technology, it can have tangible benefits for both our peoples…We believe the potential is there for a much stronger, much more robust and much larger cooperation between Israel and China."

China's attitude on Israel-Palestinian issue

s  Assist Palestinian and Israeli leaders if they wish to meet in China
s  Find a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian cause through negotiations
s Resolve the prolonged stalemate in the peace process
s Urge Israel and Palestinians to make tangible progress
s Cooperate with the international community to help Israel and the Palestinians build mutual trust and resolve issues through negotiations

Hua Chunying, spokeswoman for China's Foreign Ministry:
"China's reception of Palestinian and Israeli leaders' visits is part of the country's efforts to support the Middle East peace process and both sides' efforts to resolve differences and disputes through peace talks."

Wu Sike, Chinese special envoy to the Middle East:
"China backs the establishment of a Palestinian state on 1967 borders with east Jerusalem as its capital."

Li Baodong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations:
"Israel's settlement activities are the direct reason behind the stagnation of the peace talks. It's also the obstacle to the resumption of the peace talks."

"We hope that the parties concerned will resolve their dispute through political negotiations on the basis of relevant UN resolutions, the principle of Land for Peace, the Arab Peace Initiative and the Middle East Peace Roadmap so as to eventually lead to the establishment of an independent state of Palestine and peaceful coexistence between the two states of Palestine and Israel."

Dong Manyuan, deputy director of the China Institute of International Studies
Because of its peaceful diplomatic record, China occupies a unique position in peace talks between Palestine and Israel. The international community sees China as more neutral and balanced party than Western countries, something that makes Palestine and Israel more willing to consider China's suggestions.

Yin Gang, a researcher at the Institute of Western Asian and African Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences
China is not a member of the Middle East Quartet, and therefore even if leaders on both sides meet in Beijing, it will not make tremendous influence on resumption of Palestine-Israel peace talks.
