Taiwan authorities have decided on May 15 to immediately freeze the applications of Filipino workers wishing to work in Taiwan and recall Taiwanese representatives stationed in the Philippines after the shooting of a fisherman last week, Taiwan's Central News Agency reported.
The move aims to express the island's "strong dissatisfaction" over Manila's handling of the case, according to a spokeswoman for Taiwan's leader Ma Ying-jeou.
Tensions between Taiwan and the Philippines erupted after a 65-year-old Taiwanese fisherman shot dead by Philippine coast guards on May 9 in waters near the Philippines.
Although the Philippine representative has agreed on May 14 to apologize for the shooting, spokeswoman Lee Chia-fei said on May 15 that Ma is strongly dissatisfied with the Philippine's lack of sincerity and attitude in dealing with the case, and warned Taiwan will conduct a second round of sanctions if Manila does not meet demands proposed by Taiwan.
Ma demands that Manila issue a "formal apology," punish those responsible, compensate the fisherman's family and begin talks over fishing rights, according to the spokeswoman.
