Shanghai Pride is back this month for the fifth time. Pride5 will take place from June 14 to 22. The events this year have been planned to raise awareness for LGBT issues including marriage equality, sexual health and societal acceptance.

The festival will begin on June 14 with an art exhibition entitled Individuality with the Collective Mind at China Youthology (No.38, Lane 749 Yuyuan Road 愚园路749弄38号) at 7 pm. The show features three artists, Yang Yiliang from Changsha, Ms King from Shanghai, and Jaire Remy W from Singapore, and runs until June 23.

To mark Pride's fifth anniversary, there will be a five-kilometer run on June 15 starting from Xujiahui Park (889 Zhaojiabang Road 肇嘉浜路889号) and finishing at Fuxing Park (105 Yandang Road 雁荡路105号), where the now traditional Pink Picnic will be held. The run starts at 9 am. The Pink Picnic begins at 11 am and will go on until 4 pm. The festivities continue at 9 pm with Pride's Opening Party at Zeal (22 Zhongshandong'er Road 中山东二路22号) featuring performances, a lucky draw and drink deals.

Panels, movies and plays

On June 16, the first of two panel discussions addressing gay rights will tackle "Workplace Diversity & Acceptance" (10 am to 12 pm at Eco Village, 485 Fenglin Road 枫林路485号). The panelists include speakers from Goldman Sachs, IBM, Bayer, and NGOs Aibai and Community Business.

The second panel discussion, on June 22, will take on gay marriage and marriage equality. The speakers will include a Chinese-American couple who were married in San Francisco known as Eddy and Michael, Shen Yifei, a sociologist from Fudan University, and Ah Qiang, co-founder of PFLAG China, an organization formed by LGBT advocates and their parents, friends and supporters. The panel will take place at the US Consulate General (8/F, Westgate Mall, 1038 Nanjing Road West 南京西路1038号梅龙镇广场8楼) from 2 pm to 4 pm.

The cultural agenda for this year also includes daily film screenings of LGBT-themed flicks from around the world as well as live stage performances. On June 16, This Love, a play about a marriage of convenience, will be staged at Shanghai Rose (76 Nansuzhou Road 南苏州路76号), from 2 pm to 4 pm.

On June 21, East West Theatre will present The Scream, a black comedy about a bisexual love triangle (7:30 pm to 9:30 pm at Glamour Bar, 5 Zhongshandongyi Road 中山东一路5号). This 30-minute play will be presented first in its original English-language, New York version, and then adapted into a Chinese-language, Shanghai version. The after-show party will be hosted by Glamour Bar with special performances and drink deals.

Community spirit

Pride Week will end on June 22 with a Pride BBQ Day at Brownstone (570 Yongjia Road 永嘉路570号) from 2 pm to 7 pm, followed by the closing party at Sigma Club (601 Waima Road 外马路601号) from 9 pm to 2 pm. Last year's closing party was attended by 800 people and this year the organizers are hoping for an even bigger turnout.

"We're very optimistic that this year will be the biggest and most fun Pride yet, but more importantly, it will be the most significant in terms of content," said Dylan Chen, one of the organizers.

"With a greater focus on equality, advocacy and sexual health, we hope that we can bring together people in a more meaningful way than we have done in the past. It's time to stop being afraid of confronting the issues that seemed daunting to us before. It's time for us to come together as a community and share our experiences and knowledge for the benefit of our society."

Profits from this year's Pride will go to Beijing Zuoyou Information Center, a non-profit organization works in the field of LGBT cultural development, HIV/AIDS education and care services.
