Vietnamese wives are welcome by local men in Linqi township, Henan Province, where 23 Vietnamese women have wed Chinese husbands in the past six years.
The men here have been trending toward finding a Vietnamese wife in recent years, saying that it costs less to marry them than a Chinese wife and Vietnamese women are "hard-working and capable of supporting good family relationships."
In 2007, Wu Zhenghai was the first local in the town to bring home a Vietnamese wife, after which many other men went to Vietnam looking for work and a wife. One such man was Liu Weihua, 35, who said that he met his wife's sister at a construction site in Vietnam in 2010, who introduced the two.
Liu said that marrying a local Chinese women costs about 100,000 yuan ($16,300), when taking into account spending for the wedding, banquet and gifts, much more than the average 30,000 yuan spent on a Vietnamese wife.
A Chinese construction worker can earn about 50,000 yuan a year in Vietnam and men from Linqi find it easy to meet women to marry there and bring back home, said Liu.
